A dental implant is a device that is used to permanently replace a missing tooth or group of teeth. It is very similar to the actual root of a tooth and is placed into the bone. This is an excellent option for individuals who have lost an adult tooth due to injury, accident, disease or other circumstances. It is also a successful alternative for patients who have existing bridgework or removable dentures that are not fitting properly. Advances in the dental field have allowed implants to be done easier and with less recovery time. This procedure is quickly becoming one of the most popular forms of dental restoration due to it’s aesthetic appearance and longevity.

Before the use of dental implants, individuals only had a limited number of options for tooth restoration or replacement. A fixed bridge or removable dentures were the only choices that were available. However, these solutions come with their own set of bothersome problems. Dentures can repeatedly slip and even make humiliating sounds while eating or speaking. Bridgework can often affect the teeth surrounding the piece and the affected area is much more prone to gum irritation or disease. If properly cared for, a dental implant should last approximately 30 years to a lifetime. Yet, there are no guarantees as many factors could affect this expectancy such as genetics, diseases, proper nutrition, and hygiene.

A consultation with a dentist will be done to determine if an individual is a good candidate for a dental implant. After the initial evaluation, a plan will be into place to begin the process of inserting the implant. It is important to remember that the implantation and other necessary work is done in stages and may take time to achieve the desired results. The process will involve multiple visits to a dentist, oral surgeon and possibly other medical facilities. But, the end result is well worth the steps it takes to get there. A comfortable, natural looking restoration can boost self-confidence, enhance the appearance and make eating an enjoyable experience once again!
